Decarbonising transport is a core theme of the Europe 2020 strategy. This goal is especially urgent for cities, considering that urban mobility accounts for 40% of all CO2 emissions from road transport and up to 70% of other pollutants from transport in the EU. With a majority of the European population living in cities, this issue has repercussions not only for the environment, but also on citizens' health.
The thematic area ‘energy in urban transport’ aims to tackle these problems and includes initiatives on urban mobility planning, e-ticketing and real-time information, electric mobility, and clean vehicles in public and private transport.
Partner cities are engaging in initiatives such as: promoting bicycle use (Nantes), increasing the use of bio-fuels for buses and cars (Stockholm), and better addressing the needs of pedestrians (Terrassa).
