Amaroussion has a population of 120,000 and is situated to the north-east of Athens in Greece. In 2005 the Municipality of Amaroussion established the Environmental Management System (EMAS). The main aim is the fulfilment of citizens and employees' needs and the provision of a healthy environment. As a result, a system of total management and quality assurance of services has been established in the Municipality with main objective the constant improvement of services.
The municipality of Amaroussion was also the first in Greece to establish an integrated municipal transport system, which today serves approximately 20,000 people a day. The city is currently engaging in activities such as encouraging the use of alternative and environmental friendly transport means like bicycles under the theme of ‘energy in urban transport’.
In the field of energy saving, the city is undertaking measures to increase energy efficiency in municipal buildings. For example, energy assessments are being undertaken in municipal buildings, leading to intervention such as improving electric installations and green roof installations.
Amaroussion signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2011 and, as a partner in the CASCADE project, promises to continue to find innovative solutions to ensure energy efficiency in the city.
