Amsterdam is the Netherland’s capital and its largest city, with a population of 770,000. The city has a healthy tradition of pursuing a progressive energy and climate policy. In recent years the city has initiated projects such as installing energy-saving systems in over a thousand houses, installing solar panels on bus stops, and increasing access to financing for eco-friendly investments. As a partner in the CASCADE project,
Amsterdam focuses on the increase of a sustainable energy supply through the enlargement of wind and solar power; expansion of district heating
and cooling, smart grids and hot and cold storage.
Amsterdam signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2009 and submitted their Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) the next year.
Targets:
-
Reduction of 40% of CO2 emissions by 2025 compared to 1990
