Bacau is located in the centre of the north-east region of Romania and has a population of 175,867. The city has not yet implemented any climate policy structure within its administration, but plans to develop a strategy to achieve all national objectives in the field of sustainable energy and in particular the objectives of the Covenant of Mayors which Bacau signed in 2011.
Bacau is currently focussing on implementing an institutional structure to achieve the targets of its Sustainable Energy Action Plan
Targets
· To increase the efficiency of the municipal heat supply
· Ensure compliance with environmental standards, especially in respect to air pollution
Examples of local initiatives
· Comprehensive programme for thermal insulation in some residential districts: 45 units finished and another 145 due to be completed in the future
· Project for the efficient use of thermal energy: solar thermal systems, a heat pump, a wind turbine as well as a biogas plant installed to supply energy to various buildings
· A new cogeneration plant installed, primary and secondary heat supply networks modernised
· Project to modernise the heating system in order to comply with the environmental standards on air pollution emissions and increase energy efficiency in urban heating supply
