Burgas is Bulgaria’s fourth largest city with population just over 200,000 people. The city is undertaking an ambitious agenda to increase energy efficiency in public infrastructure and households through measures such as the introduction of energy standards for buildings, energy audits, and information campaigns.
Soon the city will start the implementation of a project aiming to increase the energy efficiency of public transport through measures such as bus rapid transit (BRT) and a traffic light system for bus priority. Burgas Municipality has adopted an active policy on improving the energy efficiency of public buildings and has realised numerous measures related to the refurbishment of schools, nurseries and kindergartens.
As a partner in the CASCADE project, Burgas will continue to develop measures to increase energy efficiency across the project’s three thematic areas. The city signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2008.
Targets:
-
26% of energy consumption to come from renewable resources by 2020
-
25% reduction of CO2 by 2020, compared to 2005 levels
Examples of local initiatives:
-
Installation of photovoltaic and solar systems on large roof areas and building of manufacturing plants, warehouses, commercial and office buildings
