Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in the Netherlands in terms of population, with 215,000 people. The city is undertaking a variety of measures to increase energy efficiency across CASCADE’s three thematic areas. In terms of ‘energy efficient buildings and districts’, for example, Eindhoven offers low-interest financing for energy efficiency measures based on a revolving fund.
The city is also involved in energy-efficient transport, ranging from initiatives stimulating electric car transport to facilitating the use of alternative modes of transport. Meanwhile, Eindhoven is engaged in biomass conversion projects and stimulating Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) under the umbrella of the theme ‘Renewable energy sources and distributed energy generation’.
The city of Eindhoven signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2008 and submitted a Sustainable Energy Action Plan the same year.
Targets:
-
Reaching energy-balance in 2035 - 2045
-
2% reduction in fuel use every year
Examples of local initiatives:
