Genoa is a port city in the north of Italy, with a population of 608,500. As a partner in the CASCADE project, the city is estimating that its measures will significantly reduce energy emissions across the project’s three thematic areas: in Energy Efficient Buildings and Districts by 6.9%, Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Energy Generation by 7.4%, and in Energy in Urban Transport by 5%. To increase energy efficiency in buildings and districts, the municipality is focussing mainly on public buildings, through for example the installation of solar panels and efficient light bulbs. In terms of energy in transport, Genoa is undertaking various hard concrete measures, including the renewal of the municipal fleet, upgrading the rail system as well as soft measures, such as implementing an access-fee to the city for private and commercial vehicles.
Regarding local energy generation, Genoa’s initiatives measures include for example the construction of an energy recovery plant from an urban solid waste treatment facility, the promotion of installation of micro-combined heat and power (CHP) plants at hospitals, hotels, shopping centres and sports facilities, and several measures to promote solar energy.
