The city of Iași is located in the east of Romania, and is the second largest city in the country, after Bucharest, with a population of 300,000.
Iași signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2011 and will submit its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) in 2013. Within the drafting process of the SEAP, Iași’s aim is to establish targets that are consistent with efficient energy policies of the EU.

· Reducing CO2 emissions by at least 20%
Examples of local initiatives
· Energy consumption of heating units in residential buildings reduced, and 16 apartment buildings (399 apartments) modernised in Iași between 2009 and 2011
· 49 thermal substations replaced and the secondary heating distribution networks expanded to a 55 km network
· Equipment of 95 thermal substations and 48 thermal modules replaced
· Participation in a Civitas Plus programme of the EU: implementation of a project called ARCHIMEDES
· Intention to modernise a 16 km public transport route in order to make electric transportation more efficient
