The city of Terrassa is located in the north east of Spain, and has a population of 213,000. Having signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2009 and submitting a Sustainable Energy Action Plan the following year, the city is eager to increase energy efficiency as a partner in the CASCADE project.
Terrassa has ambitious goals across CASCADE’s three thematic focuses, for example under the theme ‘renewable energy sources and distributed energy generation’, the city has plans to install photovoltaic power systems on the roofs of public buildings, and promote the production of renewable energy in the private sector also. To improve energy efficiency in buildings and districts, the city will replace lighting on the street and in public buildings with more efficient alternatives, and create the position of an energy agent and energy commission.
For the theme ‘energy in urban transport’, the city will review its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, and focus on a shift away from private car use and towards more public transport, cycling and walking.
Targets:
- 20% reduction in CO2 by 2020, compared to 2005 levels
