With a population of 271,000, Venice is a city in the north of Italy. The city signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2011 and, as a partner in the CASCADE project, is implementing measures to increase energy efficiency while concurrently protecting the character of the city. Specific measures under the theme of ‘energy in urban transport’ include building tram infrastructure; renewing the bus fleet; and car- and bike-sharing.
Venice is exploiting renewable sources by harnessing wave- and solar-energy. Additionally, the city is implementing measures in the area of ‘energy efficient buildings and districts’ that at the same time rejuvenate and redevelop existing areas, for example Porto Marghera and the island of the Certosa. Specifications and training courses for sustainable constructions and tools to measure energy efficiency are also being implemented to promote a new cultural approach towards more energy efficient buildings.
Targets:
- Reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020
Examples of local initiatives:
-
EPI-SOHO Project - developing a methodology for local energy certification of buildings;
-
ECHO-ACTION Project - targeting the reduction of thermal energy, electricity and the increased use of renewable sources involving 300 families;
-
BIOSIRE – bio-fuels and electric propulsion creating sustainable transport in tourism resorts; and
-
People Mover - connecting the island of Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma with a modern passenger transport.
