Yerevan is the capital and the largest administrative, economic, scientific and cultural centre in the Republic of Armenia. More than one million people live in the capital, comprising over 34% of the population of the Republic of Armenia. The city is situated at an elevation of 990 metres and encompasses around 227 km2.
In the long term, the city of Yerevan will join the Covenant of Majors.
Targets
· Improving heating systems in buildings and districts
· Improving street lighting system
· Reducing water leaks in the network through the modernisation of water pipelines
· Implementing thermal insulation in apartments
· Glazing, repairing and making weatherproof doors and windows in building entrances
· Promoting energy-efficient and energy-saving technologies
Examples of local initiatives
· Green urban lighting project implemented and of a project which aims at improving energy efficiency in residential buildings
· Old city buses replaced with new mid-range city buses that run on alternative fuels (compressed natural gas)
· On-going modernisation programme established for the metro system
· City’s first cycle lane created
